Bike transport

Is it allowed to carry a bike on the train?

Yes, against payment of a bicycle fee it is possible to take bicycles and bicycle trailers on the train under supervision on certain trains specified by the railway company. The bike must not weigh more than 50 kg. For each train it is marked in the timetable whether it is possible to take bicycles on it. In addition to paying the bicycle fee, you must also have a seat reservation for the bike in advance.

Bike transport must be announced online at least 7 working days before the trip using the following link: https://www2.gysev.hu/kerekparos-utazas-bejelentese.

The following vehicles can be transported on the train without paying a bicycle fee:

a) All bicycles and scooters with a wheel diameter ≤ 20”

b) Bicycles originally manufactured as unicycles (monowheel).

A bicycle may only be taken into the passenger compartment of the railway carriage if the wheel diameter is 20 inches or less, the child riding it is under the age of 14 and if the bike does not disturb the other passengers. Bicycles for which no fee is charged may be transported free of charge outside the passenger compartment of the vehicle (platform, multi-purpose room) even without folding or packaging. In addition, a folded bicycle with a wheel diameter of 20 inches or less may be carried in the passenger compartment of the passenger car if it can be placed under or between the seats in a manner that does not disturb other passengers. Such a bicycle can be taken along even if the train is marked in the timetable as one not allowing bike transport. In all other cases, bicycles can be transported as stated in the tariffs resp. as indicated on the train (with a pictogram).

In case of buses replacing trains, bike transport is not possible.

Ticket refund

A/ Until when can a ticket be returned before the train departs?

Tickets purchased at the ticket office or from a ticket machine for less or more than 100 km can be refunded before the start of the validity period for a processing fee of 20% at the ticket office of the railway company that issued the ticket.

Intercity seat reservations are refunded up to one hour before the train’s departure at the latest.

Tickets purchased online or via the MÁV app can be refunded up to one hour before the departure of the selected train for a 10% processing fee.

More information about e-tickets refund: https://www.mavcsoport.hu/mav-start/belfoldi-utazas/elektronikus-jegyek-visszateritese (opens in a new window).

B/ How can I request a refund in the event of a train delay or cancellation?

If there is a delay of more than 10 minutes or if the train is canceled, you can cancel the trip at the departure station. In this case, at the request of the passenger, the conductor of the train or the employee on duty at the departure station issues a certificate, on the basis of which the ticket is refunded to the passenger without any processing costs.

C/ The AC is not working properly; the train is delayed; there is no 1st class car - who will provide proof of this?

The certificates required by the railway company are issued by the employee on duty at the station or by the conductor on the train and this is noted on the passenger’s ticket.

D/ When can an Intercity seat reservation be refunded?

One hour before departure at the latest. If the train departs with a delay of more than ten minutes, the passenger can cancel the trip. In this case, he/she will receive back the full price of his/her seat reservation and of his/her ticket, upon presentation of the required certificate.

E/ Are season tickets refunded?

For a full refund, the unused employee monthly card issued for a given connection and the half-monthly card valid for the first half of the month must be submitted by the 5th day of the month of validity, while a half-monthly card valid for the second half of the month must be submitted for refund by the 20th day of the given month.

The refund request must be submitted to the ticket office together with the original season ticket and the relevant form filled out accordingly. For a full refund, the 30-day card must be submitted before the first day of validity.

If the passenger returns the 30-day employee card by midnight on the 14th day after the first day of validity, the price of a half-month ticket will be deducted from the total price and only the remaining amount will be refunded.

The price of the County Card and the National Card, as well as a student card issued for a specific relation, can only be refunded before the start of the validity period.

A processing fee of 20% is charged for the refund.

In cases other than those mentioned above, the refund claim must be submitted in writing to the Passenger Transport Division of GYSEV Zrt.

Train delays

In which cases is the passenger entitled to a flat rate refund in the event of a train delay?

In the event of a delay of domestic trains subject to a surcharge due to a disruption in rail operations, the passenger is entitled to a flat-rate compensation between the departure and destination stations specified on the ticket, the amount of which is:

in case of delays of 30 -119 minutes: 25% of the fare in case of delays of over 120 minutes: 50% of the fare.

No compensation can be claimed if the passenger did not have a ticket or the surcharge valid for the respective train and route.

The basis for calculating the compensation amount is the price of the ticket for the journey that the delayed train made or the canceled train should have made; in the case of a return ticket, that part of the price of the ticket (outward journey or return journey) during which the passenger suffered the delay.

Changing trains and continuing the trip in the event of a train delay

A/ What should I do if I had to change trains but my train was late?

In any case, the intention to change trains must be communicated in advance and in good time to the conductor on duty, who will, if possible, ensure that the journey continues without interruption.

If it is not possible to continue the journey due to delay, a certificate must be requested from the conductor to reimburse the unused ticket.

B/ What happens if the last connection is cancelled and the trip cannot be continued on the given day?

The railway company is responsible for the damage resulting from the fact that the passenger cannot change the train and reach the last connecting train of the given day due to the delay or cancellation of his/her train and there is no further train departing to the planned destination on the same day. With respect to GYSEV stations, two trains are regarded as connecting trains if there is a gap of at least 10 min. between their scheduled arrival and departure times and the passenger has a valid ticket for the connecting train.

In this case, the passenger can choose the train with the same number that runs on the next calendar day until its departure time, or, if the train does not run, until midnight of the following calendar day. The passenger must inform the railway company of the missed connection and the train chosen for the onward journey. If the validity of the passenger’s ticket expires due to the missed connection, it will be renewed at the railway company’s personal customer service offices or at its ticket counters in accordance with the rules for extending the validity of tickets.

The compensation includes the reimbursement of justified overnight accommodation costs as well as the justified costs of notifying people waiting for the passenger. The railway company assesses the justification of the costs based on the invoices and receipts submitted and pays them within 30 calendar days.
