Project title: Sustainable public transport solutions and innovative governance schemes for improving connectivity in Central Europe

Programme priority: Cooperating for a better connected central Europe

Programme priority specific objective: SO3.1: Improving transport connections of rural and peripheral regions in central Europe

Leaving the car at home remains challenging for people in sparsely populated areas close to borders. Too often, there are simply no satisfying public transport offers available. The SUSTANCE project involves a wide range of transport stakeholders to co-design innovative mobility services and governance schemes that will help public authorities to change this. In this process, the partners deploy amongst others customised intervention action plans in pilot regions.

GYSEV Zrt. will implement within the project a Pilot Action improving cross-border train services between Burgenland and Western Hungary. In concrete, a new seasonal direct train service will be tested and operated between the Neusiedler Seebahn-line and Sopron, providing an attractive alternative for both commuters and tourists in the Lake Neusiedl / Fertő region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Modern, comfortable electric multiple units (EMUs) with possibility to transport bicycles will be used. The Pilot Action will be accompanied by promotional activities on the train and at the stations.
